What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse

Hey, you know how squids are all boring and lame? What if they had elbows, “enormous fin-like ears,” and twenty-foot tentacles that dangle beneath him like some kind of H.R. Giger-designed chandelier? Would that be so much better? I think Anderson Cooper would say so, based on the below clip.

Ignore the awkward, pointless flirting at the end and concentrate on the thing that’s surely starring in the nightmares of someone tonight. It’s a member of the genus Magnapinna — literally, “big fin” — and also the exclusive German animal club Kinderängstigend — literally, “child frightener.”

It's probably the inspiration for the Martians in the second volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

  2. Yes, probably, but in a roundabout manner. Unless I'm mistaken, those aliens are H.G. Wells's tripod terrors from War of the Worlds.

  3. Anonymous1:50 PM

Yes they are, but as drawn in the comic they look hella like Magnapinna. Maybe the original tripods were inspired by this animal too.

  4. I see what you mean now. Yeah, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Alan Moore thrust a book about magnapinna in front of his artist and told him: "This one. This thing. It's going to look like that."

Actually, that's probably what it's like to work with Alan Moore everyday.

  5. Yeah, those two are totally doing it. Totally.

As for squid, Watchmen is supposedly going to be squidless. That should further stick it to Alan Moore.
