This late 80s-to-early 90s commercial for Hershey’s Whatchamacallit bar takes me back almost more than words can express… to a time when this would play about every fifteen minutes on Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons.
I also can’t get over how much the band singing the jingle reminds me of Luscious Jackson.
Food, previously:
This song has been stuck in my head for twenty years, and I still don't understand half of the words.

Whatever it was
Chocolatey chocolate

How's it go?
[This line unclear... rowsendoo?]
Sugary caramel
Whatchamacallit
Doohickeys
You know what I mean
Peanuty crispies
Whatchamacallit
Sugary, chocolatey crunchy, Hershey's
Doodad
Skidamarink
More than a mouthful
Whatchamacallit
(ah-ah)
Is it really sugary? Because it sounds like chewy to me. And yeah, the unclear line does sound like rowsendoo :-P Maybe the "row" is how?
ReplyDeleteSounds like Wowsendoo to me.
ReplyDeleteWow. that took me back. And I'm just realizing that the song sounds like a mixture of Sonic Youth and Madonna.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes. This commercial brings back memories and I think about it every time I see the candy bar in the store.
ReplyDeleteBTW, anyone tried their new Whatchamacallit spinoff "Thingamajig"?

I haven't tried it yet, but I want to. Maybe tomorrow when I see it. Too bad it's limited edition.
Doc Hazard: It's earworm-worthy, for sure.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Thanks!
Godaigamer, MC and Megan: No clue. I can't make any sense of the lyrics. Anyone's guess is as good as mind, I say.
Jason: Did not know about the Thingamajig. I suspect they're not trying it out in my neck of the woods, but I'll look for it. What's in it?
My friends and I were just talking about this and this is the only thing on the internet with the word "rowsendoo" on it. Rowsendoo or Wowsendoo? Question for the ages. Who sings it? We should find out and ask her.
ReplyDeleteI hated this commercial as a six-or-so year old because of "Rausen du" and imagine my surprise that this is what everyone seems to think the lyric is. My friend was singing this commercial about a week ago and we decided to watch it. I think it's crazy that this blog post coincides with my re-discovery of this ad.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how much all of us remember this ad. We could've been learning about Rembrandt or having some deep impression made on us by a mentor. Instead, we were placed in front of a TV and taught about "Rausen du."
