What Is Drew Doing With His Life?

I'm calling it my biggest accomplishment this year. In short, the newspaper I work for put up a new website this past Friday. It's the culmination of a lot of work from a lot of people, and I'm very happy to say I've been part of it.

Check it out at www.independent.com.

(Seriously, it's independent.com. How our paper ever managed to snatch up that address before anybody else is beyond me, but I'm glad we did.)

It's a good site, I think, and it solves a lot of the problems we had with the old site, which made it next-to-impossible to find anything. In any case, we're trying to get big traffic numbers for this debut weekend, and management has instructed the Indy staff to tell everyone who has even a remote interest in our working lives to have a look at the new online digs.

The reason I get to be proud of this new-fangled contraption is that my work at the Independent has me more or less in charge of the paper's news section. In addition to writing some news stories, I'm also now the news editor. Half of my time per week, however, is spent working for the paper's site, managing columns and online only content and trying to integrate what news we print in the paper with what goes online. Since out paper is a weekly, beefing up the online component is our means of going daily and helping to break news in the void caused by the collapse of the Santa Barbara News-Press. Believe me, its been an interesting time to be a journalist in this town. I'm just very happy that I found a job that allows me to get articles printed in a widely read newspaper while also helping me learn more about online journalism—and all after graduating from a school that doesn't have an official journalism program. Take that, grad school.

It's not complete yet, as there's quite a bit of old content we need to transfer over from the old site. But what's there is there. Please, take a moment to look if you have the chance. It's the closest I've come yet to having something to show for everything I've done since graduating college.
